European Walnut Edge Glued Panels & Worktops

European walnut panel (3-layer)Introduced into Britain about the middle of the fifteenth century, commercial supplies of European Walnut are produced mainly in France, Turkey, Italy and the former Yugoslavia, although the tree is also a native of the Himalayas, Iran, Lebanon, & Asia Minor. It is also called English Walnut, French Walnut, etc according to its place of origin.

The grain of European Walnut is slightly open and usually straight, but may be wavy or irregular and the texture is usually coarse, but uniform. The wood averages 670kg/m3 when dried.

It is common practice to steam or stain the whitish to a pale straw coloured European Walnut sapwood, to match the colour of the heartwood, which is greyish or light to dark greyish-brown. In addition, infiltrations of colouring matter produce a darker-coloured streaky figure to the wood, sometimes irregularly distributed throughout the heartwood, at other times concentrated in a relatively small core of inner heartwood. The darker streaks are usually of a smokey-brown or reddish-brown colour, the decorative appeal often being accentuated by natural wavy grain. Local growth characteristics tend to vary the appearance of wood coming from certain areas.

Burrs crotches and stumps provide valuable material for highly decorative Walnut Burr veneer, and a good walnut tree should always be grubbed out and never sawn down above soil level, as stumps often produce beautifully mottled wood.

A fairly hard to tough wood with a relatively high resistance to splitting, European Walnut works easily and well with both hand and machine tools. It is suitable for hand carving and for turnery, finishing cleanly from the tool. It can be glued satisfactorily, and takes an excellent polish, and its decorative pattern is particularly highlighted by silky lustre varnish.

Both full length and finger jointed walnut panels are regularly used as walnut worktops, and in the manufacture of all types of furniture.
