Overview

Growing in Europe including the British Isles, Cherry occurs from Scandinavia and south-west Russia southwards, and is found in western Asia and the mountains of North Africa.

Cherry heartwood is warm and reddish orange to pale pinkish-brown in colour, and fairly well defined from the lighter coloured sapwood. The colour becomes more and attractive and warmer in colour over time, while steaming logs tends to speed up this process and even out variations in colour.

A generally straight grained, tough timber with a fairly fine, even texture, cherry's strength properties are similar to those of oak. Straight grained material works & finishes particularly well. Because of its texture and pores, European Cherry is excellently suited for polishing.
